Alien Swarm was released in July 2010 and many GSPs, clans, etc. would like to get a server running. The following simple guide will help you get your Alien Swarm Server up and running.

  • Download and Install the hldsupdatetool
  • Navigate to where you have installed the hldsupdatetool.
  • Run the following to get the server files downloaded to your server:
    • hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game "alienswarm" -dir "pathtoalienswarm" -verify_all
    • pathtoalienswarm would be the path where you want to download/run the server. Example G:\Gameservers\user1\alienswarm or if you have the hldsupdatetool in the directory that you want to install it put a . for the directory -dir .
  • Setting up a command line for the server.
    • The regular command line for source games will work fine.
    • Navigate to the directory where the srcds.exe is located and run the following from command line or service daemon.
    • For internal use:
      • srcds.exe -game swarm -ip 127.0.0.1 -port 27015 -maxplayers 4 +exec server.cfg +map lobby -lan 1
    • For public internet servers*
      • srcds.exe -game swarm -ip 192.168.1.2 -port 27015 -maxplayers 4 +exec server.cfg +map lobby -lan 0 -console
      • 192.168.1.2 being your computers ip address which can be found by running ipconfig from the command line.
      • For dedicated servers you can use any ip address allocated to your nic card as long as the ip and port are not in use.
    • Make sure you use a public internet IP if you are in a datacenter and an available port, if you are running your server from home(not recommend) you can use your computers private IP address.
    • If you want to see what is going on with the server you can add -console to the command line argument.
    • *If you get the message from the server starting in LAN mode because it could not load STEAM library you will need to copy the STEAM dlls to your gameserver folder.
      • Files that you will need to copy over are:
      • Steam.dll, steamclient.dll, tier0_s.dll, vstdlib_s.dll
  • You should now be able to run a nice Alien Swarm dedicated server.
  • Alien Swarm Official Website / Alien Swarm STEAM App Page.
